Kate Baum
Kate Baum, a South Dakota grown singer, songwriter, and storyteller, uses her background in teaching & performance to offer Poetry to Music, a residency that combines language, poetry, music, & performance tailored to fit any age in classrooms, youth centers, community organizations, and healthcare systems. After more than two decades writing music, performing, teaching writing, and inspiring students and listeners of all ages, Kate created this residency as a combination of all the skills and passions she has harvested from her experiences and adventures thus far. She has 1 full length album of original songs, a Master’s Degree in Linguistics & Composition from SDSU, and has shared her gifts of music, writing, and storytelling with audiences across South Dakota and Alaska, where she taught in several locations a variety of subjects to students diverse in age, ethnicity, and ability levels for a decade before moving back to SD and settling in the Black Hills. Kate also co-facilitates The Sounds of Healing, a women’s retreat that combines music, writing, yoga, and meditation to discover one’s true potential. Directing this retreat gives Kate the experience necessary to easily adapt her residency for adults and senior citizens. Kate leads participants through various writing exercises with relevant materials and activities for each age and ability level, and she infuses her performances and stories periodically to help every participant explore language and its rhythms in the residency described below:
Poetry to Music:. Participants will discover the depths of our native tongue by putting creative thoughts into words & phrases, working with natural rhythms, and combining them into lyrical lines. Using the lines created individually and in groups, participants will create verses, refrains, and bridges to tell a story, building a song. Kate will take the creations and put them to music, performing the compiled song for the participants of the residency. She often records the creations and shares them on her Facebook & YouTube pages listed below.
