Amanda Boerger

Woman (Amanda Boerger) portraitAmanda Boerger is a Sioux-Falls based multimedia artist. Having worked in a variety of educational roles over the years, Boerger feels enthusiastically about supporting confidence, perseverance, and innovation in art learners of all ages. She believes all people have the potential to be artists, and that experimentation with multimedia is essential to discovering everyone’s unique hidden talents.

Boerger’s residency curricula offers a liberating approach to using paint. Students will be able to experiment with loosening up their perspective of figurative artwork by creating an “acrylic paint collage”. Depending on the age range and time constraints of each location, students will create a landscape, portrait, or still life artwork. The steps are as follows: 1) Students enjoy expressively laying down loosely mixed paints on paper. 2) Once dry, students will use scissors (or xacto blades with adult learners) to crudely cut each part of their picture. 3) Lastly, students will meticulously glue together their composition.

At the end of the course, students will have experienced the process and outcome of relinquishing control. By using scissors instead of pencils and paint brushes, some control is inevitably lost. Boerger’s hope is that by creating an artwork that isn’t necessarily supposed to look just like the subject, all learners will come away with a piece that they feel good about making.

Additionally, as a prolific practicing professional artist, Boerger also likes to engage students in a positive art critique. In small groups, students will be asked to look at each other’s finished work and talk about its strongest aspects.
