HECTOR CURRIEL
Sioux Falls-based visual artist Hector Curriel, born in Lima, Peru, discovered his passion for the arts at a young age, cultivating it through his youth. He pursued architecture in Lima, refining his artistic skills. Following his relocation to the US in 2001, Curriel studied art at the Art Instruction Schools in Minneapolis, MN. In 2005, he began working as an editorial cartoonist for various US newspapers, while also establishing himself as a book illustrator with over a dozen published titles, and a fine artist. His notable awards include second place in the Charles Schulz Cartoon Art Competition (2009), first place in the Professional Award at Art Instruction Schools (2011), and the Midwest Book Award Winner as an illustrator. Curriel's latest publication, a graphic novel about American Hero Joe Foss, released in 2022 by the South Dakota Historical Press, earned a Spur Award from the Western Writers of America for Best Non-Fiction Juvenile Book.
Curriel’s paintings are featured in private and public collections nationwide, with exhibitions at prominent venues such as the California State Library, South Dakota Capitol Building, Augustana University, and Minnesota West Community College. Additionally, Curriel has served as an accomplished artist presenter for over a decade, conducting frequent workshops and residencies through the Artists in Residency Program for the South Dakota Art Council. During his residencies, Hector teaches students the process of creating artwork, imparting methods and techniques to foster creativity and artistic knowledge.
